Doreen’s Pizzeria – 4 Untrue Things You Might Believe About Pizza

4 Untrue Things You Might Believe About Pizza

Despite what the haters say, pizza is still one of America’s most popular and iconic foods. It’s delicious, easy to make, and a staple in most homes. So next time you feel down about your pizza addiction, remember that you’re not alone.

1. Italy Created Pizza

Food items similar to pizza can be traced back to our most ancient ancestors. For example, in the 6th century B.C., the Persians would bake bread on their shields. Similarly, the Greeks served their king a similar dish. However, today’s modern pizza is more correctly dated back to the Greeks. It is believed that the Romans later stole the idea from the Greeks and then evolved it into Naples, Italy. This is because the Romans took everything from the Greeks. That’s history.

However, the Neapolitan pizza is often credited with being the first pizza. This pizza is rectangular, very thin crust, topped with oregano, basil, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese. However, this is not the pizza we enjoy today. The pizza we have now and the pizza we have heard of are two different things.

2. U.S. Soldiers Brought Pizza to America

The myth goes that American troops liked pizza so much during World War II that they had to bring it back to the United States. This is thought to be because of the timing of when the troops returned and the dish’s growing popularity. Most of the soldiers were located in the north and west of Europe. The smaller force that invaded Italy wouldn’t have had time to eat pizza when they weren’t fighting.

The war had left the area so destitute that they didn’t have the ingredients or ability to make pizza. Naples residents were starving and were not going to risk their family’s health to save a few pieces. Pizza became popular in the U.S. due to all the immigrants from Italy.

3. Hawaiian Pizza Was Created in Hawaii

Some might disagree, but the Hawaiian pizza or pizza with pineapple on it is actually so delicious and so good. Hawaiian pizza was created in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, an immigrant from Greece. He owned a restaurant in Chatham, Ontario, Canada.

He was trying to create a pizza for the people in Hawaii that included pineapple. The idea was to pay tribute to his customers and their heritage. He served the pizza out of the front window and had great success with it. Then he sold it in the restaurants behind him. He called it Hawaiian pizza because he thought it would sell better.

4. Pepperoni Is an Italian Topping

You might think that ordering pepperoni pizza in Italy would get you a pizza topped with the spicy, cured meat that we know and love. But you would be wrong. In Italy, ordering a pizza with pepperoni on it would actually get you a pizza topped with bell peppers.

That’s because, in Italian, peperone means bell pepper. The original pepperoni pizza actually originated in America with Italian Americans in New York. They used a unique mixture of thinly sliced pork and sausage to make the delicious topping we have today.

Conclusion

Pizza is delicious. People everywhere love pizza. So if you’re feeling down about your pizza addiction, know that you’re not alone, and there’s nothing wrong with you! Some people even consider ordering pizza as a form of depression. It’s just a way for you to feel better about life. Or maybe you just want to reward yourself for a job well done. Either way, pizza is a food item worth having in your life.
